Deerhunter @ Le Poisson Rouge, NYC – pics

Last night was a special night of music at Le Poisson Rouge in NYC (September 9). Unfortunately I missed the early show where Skuli Sverrisson and Olof Arnalds each performed a full album and were joined by guests such as Nico Muhly and Laurie Anderson whose husband Deerhunter’s Bradford Cox later said he just missed meeting (and getting an autograph from) in the back room.

Deerhunter hit the stage around 11:20. Bradford immediately began chatting with the crowd and seemed to be in great spirits. The music started and the sound was a little off, but they seemed to fix it by the second or third song (though people standing near the front later told me the sound was messed up the entire show). One thing with Deerhunter is that when they are played at a high volume, they sound that much stronger and last night was LOUD. I even caught a few people with fingers in their ears, which is always a good sign. The setlist was very accessible and full of crowd pleasers. They played a lot of older material (“Fluorescent Grey,” Spring Hall Convert,” “Strange Lights,” “Hazel St.”), a few from Microcastle (“Agoraphobia”, “Saved By Old Times” and I think “Never Stops”) and “Operation” off of the recently leaked and soon to be released Weird Era Cont. They started the encore with a hilarious, yet well done death metal version of what sounded like Jay Reatard’s “Always Wanting More,” introducing the segment as a “unique opportunity to hear material off their new album.” The show seemed a little short, clocking in at little over an hour, but I didn’t leave disappointed. Actually, I left thinking it was one of the best Deerhunter shows I have seen yet.
