Den-Mate

Den-Mate releasing 'Loceke,' touring (stream "XOSO" & two other songs)

DC’s Jules Hale makes music as Den-Mate, and she’s releasing her debut album under this moniker, Loceke, on September 28 via Babe City Records. She previously released two singles, “Sick” and “Charlotte,” which saw Den-Mate making the kind of dream pop that Beach House and Chromatics fans will probably dig, but we’re premiering a third song, “XOSO,” which is a little different. This one’s a little more psychedelic, a little more beat-centric — it’s kinda got a Portishead vibe, or sounds a little like it could be a ’90s Garbage deep cut. Lyrically, the song “is about loving something that’s toxic for your health– whether it’s a person, a substance, or an ideology,” Jules tells us. “In the specific context of the song, it is loosely about a runaway teen living in the city who’s trying to get by balancing their struggle with addiction. This person, like many others from my hometown, romanticize their addiction and have only started to acknowledge that it’s bad for them. XOSO draws upon the feelings of recognizing your own toxic health issues and struggling to weigh this against the pleasures of the habit.” Listen, along with the two previous singles, below.

Den-Mate also has shows coming up. She plays Brooklyn’s Elsewhere Zone One this Tuesday (9/18) opening for Gnarcissists, with Native Sun also on the bill (tickets), followed by a hometown release show on 9/29. Then, she tours in November, including a return to Brooklyn on November 10 at Alphaville (ticket info TBA). All dates are listed below.
