DJ Shadow and Cut Chemist have announced the Renegades of Rhythm Tour, marking the latest in a series of several tours the two have done together. This time they’ll be playing special tribute to hip-hop legend Afrika Bambaataa. The two crate-diggers will be playing vinyl-only shows, spinning records from Bambaataa’s personal collection of over 40,000 records, which is permanently archived at Cornell University. Says Shadow:

His collection includes not just Soul and Rap, but also Soca, Calypso, Dub, Salsa…it’s obvious that this music was important to him, and it’s reflected in his own music. For example, when the Soulsonic Force is singing an African chant, it actually comes from a Manu Dibango record. That’s when being a crate-digger comes in handy – you have to be able to pick up on the references and reiterate them…

…This has never been done before, definitely not on this scale. They’re HIS records, with his blessings. This isn’t just ANY copy of ‘X’ breakbeat, it’s THE copy, THE copy that started everything. Not just any records, the MASTER OF RECORDS’ records.

The tour will stop in Irving Plaza in NYC on September 4. Tickets for that show, and for the rest of the tour, will go on sale this Friday, June 20 at 10 AM with a Citi Cardmember and Live Nation mobile app presale beginning Thursday (6/19) at 10 AM. The complete list of dates can be found below.
