Halloween is creeing ever closer as October draws to a close. The main event is still over a week away, and with it the Village Parade, plus many other concerts and spooky events (see our guide to Halloween in NYC for details).

To get you in the spirit of the season early, the beloved Tompkins Square Halloween Dog Parade took over much of Tompkins Square Park on Saturday (10/21). Hundreds of costumed dogs and their owners, as well as curious onlookers, spilled out of the multi-use courts and lined the fences surrounding them. Prizes were awarded for the best canine costumes, but to me, all the dogs in attendance were winners. Check out pictures in the gallery above.

For even more costume-clad dogs, the 19th annual Great PUPkin Dog Costume Contest happens on Saturday, October 28 at 11:30 AM. Preregistration has sold out, and day of registration starts at 10:30 AM – there are only 60 slots, so don’t be late! Ten winners will receive a PUPkin rosette and prizes donated by local businesses.
