download Matt Pond PA's free two-song single ahead of his new LP
Matt Pond PA is following last year’s Winter Lives LP with a new album called Still Summer on August 11 via his own 131 Records (pre-order). The album includes contributions from Laura Stevenson, Laura Burhenn, Caroline Reese and Anya Marina, along with his band members Chris Hansen, Shawn Alpay, Mel Guerison and Kyle Kelly-Yahner.
Ahead of that album’s release, he’s putting out a free two-song single with non-album tracks “Skin and Bones” and “Sugar River.” He’s calling the single Double Freeture and here’s what he tells us about the release:
Double, triple, quadruple features until dawn. My distorted formative mind loved the cinematographic escape from familial ripples and teenage turbulence. American Graffiti, Dazed and Confused, Breaking Away, Jaws, The 400 Blows, any-film and every-film. Out on the late-night living room floor, I was lost and loving it.
It can be the selfsame with songs. The first time hearing Tender by Blur, pressing play on a fresh cassette of Queen. Double Nickels On The Dime vs. the White Album — no one will ever know the rightful victor. (Everyone here gets and deserves the crowning trophy.)
“Skin and Bones” and “Sugar River.” These are true stories of midday and midnight exultation. From Hudson, New York, to Hanover, New Hampshire. Their narratives are unto themselves — adrift in the moment, full bloom, free. These songs were ultimately meant to be given away — onto a mix and flying out the window.
“Skin and Bones” is a jangly, anthemic rocker that sorta borrows from the melody of The Replacements’ “Swingin’ Party,” and “Sugar River” is a softer, folkier tune. The songs premiere in this post. Matt Pond PA are also touring, including dates with Wild Pink and J Fernandez. The run with Wild Pink hits NJ on September 22 at White Eagle Hall and NYC on September 25 at Brooklyn Bazaar. Tickets will be on sale soon.
