Dr. Demento presents star-studded punk tribute LP (Misfits, Weird Al, William Shatner & more)

A whole bunch of punk, new wave, indie/alt rock artists have come together to pay tribute to beloved radio personality and novelty music guru Dr. Demento on a new two-disc tribute titled Covered in Punk. Artists such as Nobunny, Joan Jett, The Dead Milkmen, Colleen Green, The Meatmen, Shonen Knife, The Vandals, Fred Schneider, Quintron & Miss Pussycat, Los Straitjackets, Misfits, and more have covered classic songs that were staples of Dr Demento’s radio show (“Fish Heads,” “The Cockroach That Ate Cincinnati,” “Fluffy”) and there are also some of Dr. Demento’s friends covering punk songs, like William Shatner doing The Cramps’ “Garbageman,” “Weird Al” Yankovic doing “Beat on the Brat” and The Best Show’s Philly Boy Roy (aka Jon Wurster of Superchunk) doing “Punk Rock Girl.” There’s also Adam West, Elvira, Uncle Floyd, Brak, Gloria Balsam, and the whole thing is put together like an old episode of The Dr. Demento Show with the Dr. himself hosting the whole thing. The album’s out this week (1/12) and you can stream the William Shatner, Adam West and Weird Al tracks, and check out the full tracklist, below.

For folks in NYC there is a very cool release party today (1/11) at Forbidden Planet in Union Square from 6:30-8:30 PM featuring appearances from Dr. Demento, Fred Schneider, Jerry Only (Misfits), Uncle Floyd, Sal Maida (Milk n’ Cookies, Roxy Music), Dennis Diken (The Smithereens), illustrator Drew Friedman, and more. They’ll be signing copies of the record and there’s some neat exclusive merch, like a William Shatner version of the classic Cramps Bad Music For Bad People artwork, and more.
