Elton John retiring from touring in 2021 after 300-date tour (MSG & Barclays included)

Elton John has announced that he’ll retire from touring in 2021, after 300 more tour dates happening over the next three years. The tour will begin this September.

His tour includes NYC shows on 10/18, 10/19, and 11/8 at Madison Square Garden and 3/8/19 at Barclays Center. Tickets for those shows go on sale Friday, February 2 at 10 AM with various presales starting beforehand.

Currently announced North American dates run through March 2019, and NME reports that he’ll do another North American run in the fall of 2019 (including Long Island and Newark), plus UK/Europe in 2019/2020, Asia in November/December 2019, South America in 2020, and Australia/New Zealand in late 2019/early 2020. All known dates are listed below.

He revealed the news in a livestreamed video that includes a live performance from Elton and an interview with Anderson Cooper. Elton said, “The announcement is that I am not going to be touring anymore apart from the last tour which is going to start in September of this year — that’ll be a global tour. And it’s the last time that I will be touring and traveling the world, because my priorities have changed in my life. Ten years ago, if you had said I’m gonna stop touring, I’d say ‘no no, I’m a working musician, I always play,’ but we have children and they’ve changed our lives. In 2015, David and I sat down with their school schedule and I thought, ‘I don’t wanna miss too much of this.’ I’ve had an amazing life, I’ve had an amazing career, I’ve been so incredibly lucky, and I just — my life has changed, the priorities in my life have changed. My priorities now are my children and my husband and my family.” He won’t be done with music for good though. He adds, “When I say I’m stopping touring, I’m not stopping music. I will be hopefully making more records, I’ll be writing more musicals, I’ll doing more exhibitions with our photography.” You can watch the full video (which has a VR option) below.

Before the final tour, Elton John will be honored with a sold-out Grammy Awards tribute concert at NYC’s Theatre at MSG on January 30. He’s performing at it too, along with Miley Cyrus, Kesha, John Legend, Coldplay’s Chris Martin, Sam Smith, Miranda Lambert, Little Big Town, Maren Morris, and Keith Urban. He’s also doing a Vegas residency from February through May.
