Erin Rae

Erin Rae touring with Jenny Lewis, Iron & Wine, and more (watch a live session)

Nashville singer/songwriter Erin Rae makes a blend of folk and indie rock in a way that brings to mind artists like Angel Olsen or Margo Price, the latter of whom Erin has collaborated with, and if you’re into this kind of stuff, her 2018 album Putting On Airs is a must-hear. Just one listen to Erin’s warbly yet powerful voice can win you over, and that’s even clearer when you watch her sing than when you listen to the album. To see for yourself, we recommend catching her on tour or watching one of her live session videos, like her new one for “The Real Thing” which premieres in this post. She filmed it during the 2017 Americana Festival for LR Baggs, and with nothing more than her acoustic guitar and voice, she holds your attention the entire time. Watch that video and stream Putting On Airs below.

Erin also has several tour dates coming up, including support slots for some pretty incredible artists: Jenny Lewis, Iron & Wine, Hiss Golden Messenger, and Page France/Cotton Jones singer Michael Nau. “All of these artists are musicians I truly admire and have listened to for years. I just am thrilled to get the opportunity to join them and meet their audiences,” says Erin. All dates are listed below.

Putting On Airs is out now on Single Lock Records. If you like what you hear, you can order your copy here.

Erin Rae says the following of “The Real Thing”:

“The Real Thing” is about our responses to our environment – In years of therapy and recovery of different kinds—not to mention growing up in a sober household with parents that each spent some time working in a drug and alcohol treatment setting—I’ve learned a lot about how who we become as adult is shaped in response to our home environment and what our parents were like. While on a run one day, I was looking at these beautiful tall trees, and observed how they were all reaching around each other to get their own spot in the sun. It reminded me of how so much of my personality has developed to try and get my human needs met. I read an interview with Gene Wilder a while back, where he recounted how his mother was sick most of his life. He talked about a pivotal moment in his life, when his mother’s doctor told him that he had to make her smile to keep her well. It’s fascinating that his immense talents arose out of a need to keep his mother alive and stay connected to her. Most of us aren’t told explicitly that if we behave a certain way, we will get something we need from our parents or teachers, but as little children we learn what works to get a certain response, which carries over into adulthood. I’m really goofy to this day because I grew up loving to make my sister laugh.
