Eternal Summers were in town over the weekend to play Saturday’s Kanine-curated Brooklyn Night Bazaar show (4/19) and stuck around to play Cake Shop on Monday (4/21). The band are sounding strong these days, thanks in part to a great new album, The Drop Beneath. Next month, Eternal Summers will be on tour with UK group Maximo Park for a few West Coast dates, and those are listed below.

Joining them at the Cake Shop show were their Kanine labelmates Beverly, who had made their full band live debut on Friday (4/18) at BKNB. Originally a duo with Frankie Rose, Drew Citron (who’s in the current lineup of The Pains of Being Pure at Heart) now leads the Rose-less four-piece live version of Beverly. I caught the Night Bazaar show and they seemed to have it pretty down right out of the gate. It helps in no small part that Beverly’s songs are ridiculously catchy, crunchy and not too sweet — part Breeders (think “Divine Hammer”), part early Weezer. Their album, Careers, is out July 1. No other live dates at the moment — TPOBPAH are about to head out on tour — but stay tuned.

Both Eternal Summers and Beverly were on the Kanine RSD14 compilation Non Violent Femmes. Did anyone pick that up over the weekend?

Sandwiched in between were Brooklyn’s Sapphire Mansions whose crystalline sound recalls a variety of ’80s UK influences. Their debut EP is really good and while they don’t have another show lined up at the moment, they play around frequently so be on the lookout for their next show.

In related Kanine news, also playing over the weekend were UK band Fear of Men whose debut album is out today. As mentioned, they’re sticking around to play a free release party at Baby’s All Right on Wednesday (4/23). It’s an early show (doors are at 7:30 PM), Las Rosas play first and the whole thing is over by 10 PM. They’re worth catching.
