Etherea Records saved, not closing after all
Like many NYC record stores before it, Etherea was unfortunately set to close for good at the end of February. According to their website, they still are. In a February 19th message entitled “LAST CHANCE!!”, they write:
This will be the final weekend of Etherea, so please stop in, say hello and take advantage of our closing sale. Everything will be on sale at 30% off. This includes new releases, new and used cds and vinyl, accessories, and magazines. There is a fixture list for those interested in purchasing cabinets, listening stations, lighting and more. During the last week of February, we will be closed to pack and clear out the space, so now is the time to do your last-minute shopping!
Well, according to an email I received on Saturday from Etherea customer Patrick G, he “went there today to say bye (and take advantage of the 30% off). the owner guy (who’s name I never knew) said he’s ‘going to save it’ and they’re not closing…good news.” Definitely good news! And it is further corroborated by a thread on Rhythimism.com where Etherea’s (manager?) Brion is participating. Relevant passages confirming the store’s March 1st REOPENING, below…
Jan 30th, 2009, 09:17 PM Correction from Brion.
Etherea Records as run by Rich Kim is ending. It is his decision, as he no longer wishes to be involved. The business is doing very well, he is turning his back on it.
I, however, am not done. I have a huge devoted clientele and my excitement about recorded music has never been higher.
I am looking to buy Etherea and keep the doors open.
THE BUSINESS IS DOING WELL. This is a profit making business. It should and will exist in New York.
Please do not spread any gossip other than that.
If anyone has ANY leads on someone who would like to help me financially take the business that would much appreciated.
The return not only financial but spiritual.
Bless and the bless reveal.
That is followed one day later by, “I was merely pointing out that what is not true. The store is not closing for financial reasons as many on this board assumed.”, and then on February 4th:
For everyone who has been me wishing well.
I have my first investors and it appears as though we will be able to make it happen!
Thanks for all your well wishes.
If you want to participate do not hesitate. And of course if you want to keep sending the love please do so!
WHICH, was then followed by this FEBRUARY 20TH MESSAGE:
Here we go!
Let me be the first to say….
Love Saves the Day.
Etherea will close and the same day we will open in its stead!
Thanks for all the well wishes and no thanks to the unwisher!
More news as it is fit to print.
In other news, a buyer also just saved Relix Magazine.
