Fake Names at Union Pool

Fake Names (Refused, Minor Threat, etc) played their first show (videos, pics)

“I’m trying to be cool about this, but it’s a big deal,” said Dennis Lyxzén. “I mean, I bought all the Iron Cross 7″ cause I had to have them.” For fans of Dischord Records, and the general DC scene of the ’80s and early ’90s, Thursday night’s show at Union Pool was unmissable with an entire bill of alumni. Dennis, who you may know better as frontman of Refused, led the live debut of Fake Names, a new group featuring Brian Baker (Minor Threat, Dag Nasty, Bad Religion), Michael Hampton (S.O.A., Embrace, One Last Wish) and Johnny Temple (Girls Against Boys, Soulside), plus Matt Schulz who plays in Enon, SAVAK, Holy Fuck and more. With that lineup like that, Fake Names’ sound might be a given, but they seemed most similar to Dag Nasty and Embrace’s proto-emocore. They were on first but the room was packed. “Thanks for coming out early. I came from Sweden just for this,” Dennis noted, saying final song “Lost Cause” was about “us lifers.”

Pictures from Fake Names set are in the gallery above and a few videos are below.

The rest of the night was great, too, featuring the NYC debut of Mary Timony and Alec Mackaye’s new band, Hammered Hulls — check out pics and our review.

No word on when the next Fake Names show is, but Dennis will be back with Refused in May, on tour with fellow Swedes The Hives.
