Fear of Men, Puro Instinct, & Ski Lodge @ Bowery Ballroom (pics)

Brighton, UK’s Fear of Men are currently on tour with L.A.’s Puro Instinct and one of the first stops was at NYC’s Bowery Ballroom on Saturday (7/2), a show presented by BrooklynVegan. Fear of Men’s new album, Fall Forever, has them exploring darker, more widescreen territory and those songs, propelled by Jessica Weiss’ crystal-clear voice, sounded appropriately huge Saturday night. The band made songbooks just for the show which were a nice keepsake.
Puro Instinct have also gone more pop, leaving behind the haze of their early work for the Madonna-ish ’80s pop sounds of their new album Autodrama (A-OK by me), which fit well with the vibe of openers Ski Lodge who sound like the Pretty in Pink soundtrack embodied in one Brooklyn band. Further embracing that ’80s vibe was me, DJing mostly Reagan-Era alt-rock. It was a fun night.
