Now a member of the Thrill Jockey Records family, the Fiery Furnaces played some shows, including one on Sunday at Studio B in Brooklyn.

The first half of their set was a blistering prog reinterpretation of their most recent album, Bitter Tea. In less than thirty-five minutes, the band managed to cover every high point of the album, from “Waiting to Know You” and “I’m in No Mood” to a phenomenal rendition of “Teach Me Sweetheart.”……

….The second half of the set was devoted to similar treatments of older songs, with such favorites as “Spaniolated,” “Single Again,” and “Tropical Ice-Land.” With zero breaks between songs, I was impressed at Eleanor’s ability to sustain her vocal energy and falter on her immensely complex lyrics only once (that I happened to notice—not that I would, err, keep track of those things). Moreover, for those of us that occasionally find the Fiery Furnaces’ album recordings to be dense and overly difficult, their live show is a revelation: it’s actually fun. [Black Tee Shirt]
