Shirley Manson and Fiona Apple

Fiona Apple & Shirley Manson covered "You Don't Own Me" in LA (watch)

The three-day Girlschool Festival is happening this weekend (2/2-2/4) at LA’s Bootleg Theater. The music and ideas festival is a benefit for girl-positive 501c3 organizations (this year’s beneficiary is WriteGirl, which mentors girls through creative writing) and includes a sweet musical lineup, which this year includes Kristin Kontrol (with guests including Best Coast), Jay Som, Amber Coffman, Leikeli47, Soccer Mommy, Mary Lattimore, Carrie Brownstein in conversation, and more. Shirley Manson of Garbage headlined Saturday (2/3), backed by The Girlschool Choir (which featured some of the festival’s performers as backup singers), and as Pass the Aux reports, Shirley’s set concluded with a very special guest: Fiona Apple. Shirley and Fiona covered Lesley Gore’s classic song “You Don’t Own Me,” and you can watch that below. Shirley, understandably, was psyched to be sharing the stage with Fiona, saying, “I’m literally giddy like a kid, this is the kind of thing you dream about as a child.” Don’t miss Fiona’s shirt reading “Kneel, Portnow,” a message to Grammy president Neil Portnow following his “step up” comment to women in the music industry.

This is yet another recent dream collaboration come true involving Fiona Apple, who also was also joined by St. Vincent onstage at the 2017 Trans-Pecos Fest. No word yet on a followup Fiona’s 2012 album The Idler Wheel… or tour dates.
