Flume/Vince Staples collaborator Kucka playing first US headline shows

Kucka

Kučka is the moniker of Australian singer/songwriter Laura Jane Lowther, and even if you don’t know her by name yet, you may have heard her voice. She released her debut self-titled EP in 2012, which Perth producer Finatik (aka Michael Mule) got a hold of and sampled while making a beat for A$AP Rocky‘s modern-classic debut Long.Live.A$AP. Shortly after in the recording process, Rocky hit Kučka up on Skype and had her record fresh vocals for the title track.

In 2015, she followed her debut EP with the Unconditional EP on Inertia imprint Midnight Feature. The following year, she began a collaborative relationship with fellow Australian musician Flume. She’s on two songs on his 2016 album Skin — “Numb & Getting Colder” and “Smoke & Retribution,” the latter of which also features Vince Staples — and she’s on “Hyperreal” off this year’s Skin Companion EP 2. Kučka and Vince Staples also teamed with Flume on stage at Coachella 2016 for “Smoke & Retribution,” and for a 2016 triple j session where they covered Ghost Town DJs’ “My Boo.” That trio reunited once again for “Yeah Right” off Vince Staples’ new album Big Fish Theory. That song, which also features a verse by Kendrick Lamar and co-production by SOPHIE, is an all-star collaboration, a major highlight of Vince’s album, and more proof that Kučka is worth paying attention to.

Kučka also sings on Fetty Wap‘s 2016 single “Make You Feel Good,” and she received a PPCA/Australia Council recording grant to work on her upcoming debut album. While we wait for that, check out a handful of videos and song streams of her previous work below.

Kučka was just in North America as an opening act on the Mount Kimbie tour (she replaced Ash Koosha), and she’s set to return very soon for more shows. She’s opening for Mura Masa in July and August (surrounding his appearances at NYC’s Panorama and Chicago’s Lollapalooza), and she’s playing her first-ever US headline shows.

One of those headline shows is in Brooklyn on July 29 at Baby’s All Right with HDLSS and Qualiatik (tickets). All tour dates are listed below.
