Foxing's Eric Hudson lists his favorite music, TV shows, movies & games of 2018

Foxing had one hell of a 2018 with the release of Nearer My God, their best album yet and one of the year’s bests (it’s already made some year-end lists, including Anthony Green’s). Their live show is also better than ever, and they’ll stay busy on the road in 2019, including dates with Coheed & Cambria and Atlanta’s Shaky Knees festival.

Now that the year is coming to a close, we asked the band about their favorites of 2018, and guitarist/backup singer/producer Eric Hudson sent a list that includes music, TV shows, movies, and video games. “I didn’t listen to enough music this year, or play enough games, or watch enough TV to make a full list of any of those things, so here they all are combined,” he said. His list includes Turnstile, Vein, Mitski, Red Dead Redemption 2, Mandy, Bill Hader’s Barry, and more. Check out his list — with commentary on each pick — below.

All Foxing tour dates are listed below too.

Eric Hudson’s (Foxing) Favorites of 2018

10. Red Dead Redemption 2 (Video Game)
Really, I just feel obligated to put this here because so many people talk about it. I think it’s ok. I really wish the open world was more interactive. What’s the point in a huge map if you can’t interact with anything you find? It’s a beautiful game, but clunky and kind of boring.

9. The Haunting of Hill House (TV show)
This show was really entertaining and had good acting/writing. Typically, these kinds of ‘scary shows’ are pretty cheesy and bad so this was really nice in October to get all spooky with.

8. Westworld Season 2 (TV show)
If you can’t get into this show, it’s because you’re mean and you need to let me have this. I will watch Anthony Hopkins give longwinded monologues about the pathetic nature of humanity for days.

7. Turnstile – Time & Space (Music)
I love this record a lot. Admittedly, I have no cred in or knowledge of the hardcore scene but I admire records from the genre when they are as forward thinking as this one.

6. Vein – Errorzone (Music)
Again, I’m just an observer of the genre, but this record also hit me as being incredibly inventive and forward thinking.

5. God of War (Video Game)
Still haven’t beaten it, but it is undoubtedly sick af. I never get tired of recalling my axe back into my hand and beating up draugrs with my son.

4. Barry (TV show)
Dark comedy. Bill Hader. Great juxtaposition of very serious and dark emotions/events with comedy. I loved this show, but I wish the episodes were an hour long.

3. Spider-Man (Video Game)
I had no expectations for this game to be anything important. This game was incredible. Nothing beats webbin’ through the city and beating up bad guys. The combat system was extremely satisfying and the storyline was entertaining beginning to end.

2. Mandy (Movie)
This movie really rocked me. I love the approach this movie took with its lighting and visual landscape. There was never a shot or a cut that didn’t feel extremely satisfying and surreal. The visuals coupled with the incredible score done by Johann Johannsson made this my favorite movie of the year. It’s so gosh darn good. Also, I feel like Nicolas Cage only says like twenty lines the entire movie, but he did great.

1. Mitski – Be the Cowboy (Music)
I think Mitski is an artist that we are lucky to exist at the same time as. The music she puts out is genuine and innovative. Walking the line between experimenting with your art and also having a pop sensibility that is reachable for listeners is so so difficult, and doing it all while maintaining a sense of honesty and self makes Mitski my fav this year.
