Fred Armisen, Debbie Harry, Jesse Malin & More played Clash 'London Calling' tribute (pics, setlist, video)
Saturday (12/14) was the 40th anniversary of The Clash’s iconic 1979 double album London Calling, and a whole bunch of great musicians paid tribute to the record at NYC’s Bowery Ballroom that night. Led by Jesse Malin and his band, guest vocalists at “Gates of the West: Celebrating the 40th Anniversary of London Calling” included Fred Armisen (“Lost in the Supermarket”), Titus Andronicus’ Patrick Stickles (“Clampdown”), Living Colour’s Corey Glover (“Spanish Bombs” and later “Revolution Rock” with his bandmate Vernon Reid), Joseph Arthur (“London Calling”), and more.
After finishing the main London Calling set, they came back for a few more Clash classics and related songs, including “I Fought the Law” with Robert Gordon (Tuff Darts), and “Armageddon Time” with Gogol Bordello’s Eugene Hutz. For the final song of the night, Jessie Malin came out once again and brought Blondie’s Debbie Harry with him to cover The Pogues’ holiday classic “Fairytale of New York.” You can watch video of that, plus some of the London Calling performances, below.
Proceeds from the night went to the Joe Strummer Foundation and Music & Memory.
Jesse Malin will be back at Bowery Ballroom on Thursday (12/19) for a special sold-out performance of his 2019 Sunset Kids with Lucinda Williams (who produced the record).
