Freddie Gibbs released 'Freddie' ++ new DJ Muggs x MF DOOM track & Madlib collab

Freddie Gibbs has hinted at a follow up to 2017’s You Only Live 2wice for a while now. Yesterday, he dropped a humorous, vintage-style video yesterday teasing a new project, and today, he dropped a surprise new mixtape on streaming services, simply titled Freddie, an homage to Teddy (right down to the smooth cover art). The mixtape is a lean collection of raw hip hop bangers, and contains guest spots from 03 Greedo (who’s featured on the album highlight “Death Row”), Cassie Jo Craig, and a brief vocal snippet from his daughter Irie Jane Gibbs on closing track “Diamonds 2.” Throughout the project, Freddie fills each track with catchy, quotable hooks, like the instantly memorable “pushin’ weight” refrain on opening track “Weight,” and rattling, car speaker-ready production. You can stream the album in full below.

In addition to dropping this mixtape, it seems Freddie’s upcoming second collaborative album with Madlib, supposedly titled Bandana, may soon be on the horizon as well. In a story posted to his Instagram yesterday, Freddie posted a video with him and Madlib, captioned “First ‘Freddie’, Next ‘Bandana’.” Freddie also shared snippets of tracks from Bandana in another Instagram story back in March. You can view that, and revisit the pair’s 2014 album Pinata, below.

UPDATE: Cypress Hill’s DJ Muggs just announced a new project titled Assassination Day and dropped the first single featuring MF Doom and Freddie Gibbs. You can also listen to that, below…
