One of the best parts about CMJ is the day shows that are mostly free and give you a chance to see live music in a slightly less competitive time. Start your weekend early, call in sick! To give you a chance to plan your early afternoon ahead of time, we’re giving you tomorrow’s (Friday’s) daytime picks today (Thursday). You can browse our full NYC show calendar for all shows, and here are some highlights…

The Head and the Heart, Yamantaka // Sonic Titan, Speedy Ortiz, Kirin J Callinan, Eagulls, Hookworms, Special Guest @ Baby’s All Right
There’s a number of good day shows today, though of course we’d love for you to stop by our FREE day party (no RSVP, no badges) which runs from noon to 6. We’ve got sets (in this order) from Sub Pop-signed folk band The Head and the Heart (acoustic), energetic performer Kirin J Callinan, Leeds post-punks Eagulls, their pals and fellow Leeds rockers Hookworms, theatrical indie-metal-prog-pop band Yamantaka // Sonic Titan, Syrian pop singer Omar Souleyman, and indie rockers Speedy Ortiz. Hope to see you there!

Oh, and we’re giving out free tattoos from Three Kings Tattoos set up in the venue. These are the designs to choose from:

and:

Ghost Wave, The Dismemberment Plan, Eleanor Friedberger (The Fiery Furnaces), Haerts @ Judson Memorial Church
KEXP’s live broadcasts from CMJ HQ continue today, which most notably features a far more intimate performance from reunited indie rock/post-hardcore vets The Dismemberment Plan than their Terminal 5 show.

Courtney Barnett, Ginger & the Ghost, Elizabeth Rose, Poor Young Things, We Cut Corners, Jay Arner, Kid Karate @ Pianos
Our artist of choice here is Courtney Barnett, who combines late ’60s psychedelic stylings with lyrical wit.

Sheppard, The Preatures, Blind Boys of Alabama, TOPS, Hermitude, Tigertown, Wildlife @ Pianos
The Preatures, Hermitude and TOPS have been making the rounds this week a lot but — double take — yes that is Blind Boys of Alabama playing this day party too in Pianos tiny performance space. Their next show: Terminal 5.

Tweens, The BOTS, The Long Winters, Dream Boys, John Murry, Mandolin Orange @ Ace Hotel
The Ace Hotel continues it’s day series which is presented by the the MyMusicRX folks, part of the Children’s Cancer Association. Lotta good b ands on this one, including The Long Winters whose only other show is at Bowery on Friday night.

Morning Parade, Ski Lodge, Jacco Gardner, Bombay Show Pig, The Deer Tracks, Like Swimming @ Knitting Factory (FREE)
Filter continues its Culture Collide day parties with Dutch psych lover Jacco Gardner and Brooklyn’s very catchy Ski Lodge.

Crocodiles, Ski Lodge, The Denzels, Casual Sex @ Arlene’s Grocery
Ski Lodge also play this Arlene’s Grocery day party, also featuring a set from fuzz-loving Crocodiles.

Friend Roulette, Bobby Jealousy, Great American Canyon Band, Cobalt Cranes, The Noise FM @ Spike Hill
Local chamber pop collective Friend Roulette play a lot of NYC shows during not-CMJ too, but if you’re looking for some Sufjan-esque stuff, they’re always a good band to catch.

Set times and flyers for some of the shows are below. For all NYC shows, check out our full NYC show calendar.

For laughs, check out the NYC Comedy calendar too.
