Fruit Bats sign to Merge, share new song & mockumentary
Eric D Johnson briefly abandoned the Fruit Bats moniker and released an album as EDJ in 2014, but then he returned to Fruit Bats with 2016’s Absolute Loser and now he’s back with more Fruit Bats music and the news that he signed to Merge Records. He shared a new song, “Getting In A Van Again,” which is a rustic dose of Americana, and, as Eric told AV Club, “an anxiety song about literally the thing I’m doing right now, which is dealing with tour logistics.”
The song comes out along with a 15-minute mockumentary of the same name, which was directed by Jonny Look (who’s done music videos for Grizzly Bear and Cass McCombs), and stars Eric himself alongside Fruit Bats guitarist Josh Mease, and actors DeMorge Brown and Elisha Yaffe. “[Jonny Look] has this really specific style that’s very funny, but very serious at the same time,” Eric told AV Club. “And also an obsession with process—the strange, otherworldly process of how to make things happen is the best way I can describe it.” Check out the new song and the mockumentary below.
Eric is currently on tour with Vetiver lead Andy Cabic (both are playing solo sets). That tour hits Asheville, NC tonight (11/8) and ends in Brooklyn on November 15 at Union Pool (sold out). All dates are listed below.
