Funeral Sutra streaming ‘Meditations’ EP (listen); Coffins’ tour hits IO-presented Saint Vitus show tonight
by Wyatt Marshall
Japan’s Funeral Sutra play a slightly lo-fi blend of black metal and post-hardcore, bringing the two together in a powerful guitar-forward style. A lot of bands take a similar approach, but Funeral Sutra is decidedly fresh. The band, together since 2011, just released their debut EP, Meditations last month. Here’s a bit of what we had to say about it over on Invisible Oranges:
All that time practicing paid off. Meditations is a black metal/post-hardcore gem, where musicianship, songwriting ability and lofty goals meet on a slightly lo-fi tableau…
Funeral Sutra plays with emotional ups and downs, moving from moments of reflection to moments of despair, the moods evoked by awesome guitar work that buzzes away and churns out big riffs at will. Not to ignore the drumming–that’s great too, but the guitars on Meditations get center stage.

Another awesome metal band from Japan, the death/doom-monster Coffins, is bringing their tour with Bones to NYC for an Invisible Oranges-presented show at Saint Vitus tonight (5/20), which also includes Ilsa and Seven Sisters of Sleep. Tickets for tonight’s show are on sale for a little while longer, then are available at the door. That’ll be a blast, but if you can’t make that show, we will have all your metal needs covered with the very last Invisible Oranges on East Village Radio show tonight before the station shuts down.
The short tour will hit Philly tomorrow with Backslider before Coffins’ appearance at Maryland Deathfest. All remaining dates are listed, with the Funeral Sutra stream, below…
