Enslaved

Plenty of great metal, hardcore and other heavy shows in NYC are getting announced all the time. We don’t get a chance to write about all of them, so here’s a roundup of some recently-announced stuff coming up:

Pennsylvania death metal band Rivers of Nihil will release their sophomore album, Monarchy, this week via Metal Blade (pre-order), and they’re in NYC TONIGHT (8/19) to celebrate at Saint Vitus. Opening is the great local mathcore band Meek Is Murder and NJ’s Cognitive. Tickets are on sale now. You can stream the new album in full below.

Norway’s legendary Enslaved will return to North America in the fall for a tour with polished progressive metal bands Between the Buried and Me (the headliners) and Intronaut. That tour hits NYC on December 15 at Irving Plaza. Tickets are on Citi/Live Nation/Blastbeat/Ticketmaster presales now (password: “crowdsurf”) and the general on-sale starts Friday (8/21) at 10 AM. Invisible Oranges just published a piece on BTBAM’s new album, and wrote:

Between The Buried And Me sport incomparable technical skill, and their process of pushing tiny musical motifs to their logical conclusion is astoundingly thorough. But as they’ve gotten more compositionally ambitious, their ability to write songs that make sense on a moment to moment basis has fallen by the wayside. Each section of a typical Between The Buried And Me song is well constructed by itself, but as the band’s career has gone on they’ve started to have trouble transitioning smoothly, resorting to full stops before shifting gears or making jarring leaps in key or tempo.

Where previously BTBAM could make these kinds of drastic choices come across as unpredictable and exciting they now only serve to disrupt the momentum and cheapen the impact of their jaw dropping instrumental prowess. Metalsucks once compared BTBAM to LeBron James but these days they are more like James Harden; prodigiously talented, clearly very good at what they set out to do, but holy shit can they be a slog to actually watch.

On a more positive note, Enslaved released their 13th album In Times earlier this year, and you can watch the lyric video for “Thurisaz Dreaming” from that, below.

Cattle Decapitation

Cannibal Corpse, Cattle Decapitation and Soreption are touring together this fall. They aren’t hitting NYC, but will be nearby for Long Island’s Emporium on 10/14 (tickets) and Pougheepsie’s The Chance on 10/16 (tickets). Cattle Decapitation’s new album The Anthropocene Extinction came out earlier this month on Metal Blade. You can stream it in full below.

Doom trio Castle are hitting the road in the fall, and playing NYC on November 16 at the Acheron. Tickets will be on sale soon via Ticketfly.

One-man industrial metal project Author & Punisher is touring soon with Muscle and Marrow, and hitting Brooklyn’s Saint Vitus on November 3. Tickets are on sale.

Another one-man industrial project, Alberich, is playing with Azar Swan and Lussuria at the Acheron on October 2. Tickets are on sale now. You can also catch Alberich sooner with Sannhet and Uniform at Saint Vitus on Friday (8/21) (tickets).

The over-the-top Hellbent Hooker, who feature members of Ramming Speed and Mutilation Rites, play Saint Vitus on September 19 with Pink Mass and Prostitution. Tickets are on sale.

This week, the Trap Them / Full of Hell tour hits NYC at the Acheron on Thursday (8/20). Tickets for that show are still available. Other recently-discussed heavy shows/tours include GWAR, Danzig / Superjoint / Prong, Deafheaven / Envy / Tribulation, Locrian, Judas Priest & Mastodon and YOB / Black Cobra. Check out more in last week’s roundup.

Myrkur

In addition to the new music already mentioned in this post, and the new Iron Maiden song, we got a couple other exciting new streams recently too. Indie-pop-turned-black-metal musician Amalie Bruun (of Ex-Cops, Frankie Rose’s band, etc) is streaming her debut Myrkur album, M, which comes out this week via Relapse. Listen below, and check out Joseph Schafer’s review at Invisible Oranges.

Sweden’s not-actually-metal band Ghost will also drop their third album Meliroa this week on Loma Vista, and they’re streaming it now. Listen below, and catch Ghost in NYC on their acoustic tour this weekend (8/23) and their full-band tour in September. Joseph from IO also recently wrote about “Ten Songs I Want Ghost to Cover,”, including Perfume Genius, Justin Timberlake and more.
