Mastodon

Gone is Gone (Mastodon, ATDI, QOTSA) share "Violescent," detail debut EP

Newly formed supergroup Gone is Gone, which features Mastodon bassist/vocalist Troy Sanders, Queens of the Stone Age guitarist Troy Van Leeuwen (how often do you get a band with two Troys?), and At the Drive-In drummer Tony Hajjar, have released their first song and detailed their upcoming EP.

Premiering on Zane Lowe’s show, the new track “Violescent” is a crunchy, groovy sludge metal piece with a melodic bent that actually sounds like a convincing hybrid of the three famous bands whose members constitute this thing. Hajjar’s drumming is somehow driving and stuttering at the same time, Van Leeuwen’s guitar playing has the sleazy edge of the later QOTSA albums that he contributed to, and Sanders’ meaty vocals lend the howling, seething quality of some of Mastodon’s better work. You can stream that track below.

The full, self-titled EP is out on July 8 via Rise. They’ve shared the 8-song tracklist and the artwork, which you can check out below along with a stream of “Violescent.”
