Bashy

Gorillaz collaborator Bashy is in The Night Of, Black Mirror & upcoming 24: Legacy

You might know UK rapper Bashy (aka Ashley Thomas) as a collaborator of Gorillaz, having appeared on Plastic Beach and joined the band when they played Madison Square Garden back in 2010. His collaborators also include fellow Grime MCs Skepta and Kano, and he’s released records of his own (listen to some tracks below). But you might be even more likely to recognize him from some recent popular tv shows without having made the connection.

Back around the time he was doing stuff with Gorillaz, Bashy was featured on an episode of the popular (and excellent) British show Black Mirror (Season 1, episode 2… he’s one of the judges). Since then he’s stayed especially busy with acting, recently showing up in big HBO show The Night Of (one of Julie Klausner’s favorite cultural antidotes of the year). Thomas plays one of the notable inmates (I wont give any spoilers here, but if you’ve watched the show, you’ll know his character once you’ve looked it up), and that makes him one of at least two rappers on the show (maybe you caught one of Naz’s recent NYC gigs).

And Bashy’s highest-profile acting gig is yet to come, as he’s playing one of the leads in Fox’s reboot of 24, which is called 24: Legacy and is out in February. His co-lead is Corey Hawkins, who did a great job as Dr. Dre in last year’s Straight Outta Compton (and is Heath on The Walking Dead).
