Weird Al / Hot Chip / Flying Lotus / War on Drugs @ Governors Ball 6/7/2005
Weird Al came swinging right from the bell, brandishing his accordion and taking a polka tour through a number of recent top 40 hits. It was a good way to bait the crowd, likely expecting a set heavy on numbers from last year’s smash, Mandatory Fun. The first of these was “Foil”, set to the tune of Lorde’s “Royals”. Some of the props from its music video were wheeled out, plenty of aluminum foil included. The song’s Illuminati-referencing second half may have been lost on a festival crowd, but that was quickly forgotten. Weird Al darted offstage as soon as the song finished, leaving the crowd hotly anticipating what Weird Al would bring next. The thing he brought was IT. And by “IT” I mean one of his most dearly loved classics, the Michael Jackson parody “Fat”, complete with a fat suit that was a perfect replica of the one Weird Al sports in the song’s music video. If festivalgoers were still warming up to the Weird Al festival phenomenon, they were fully in his hands by this point. Even the sound guy was singing along. – [Popmatters]
Governors Ball finished up its 2015 festival on Sunday (6/7) with sets by The Black Keys, Tame Impala, Hot Chip, Flying Lotus, A-Track, The War on Drugs, Sturgill Simpson and more. But the most talked-about set may have been Weird Al who tore through hits and costume changes at a frenzied pace. Pictures from his set and the rest of day 3 are in this post.
Pictures from Governors Ball day 1 are HERE and day 2 are HERE. More from the final day, below….
