Grammys 2019 winners: Cardi B, Laurie Anderson, Lady Gaga, Childish Gambino, Drake, Brandi Carlile, more

The 2019 Grammy Awards ceremony is underway now at the Staples Center in LA and it airing live at CBS with host Alicia Keys. The pre-show (which Shaggy hosted) already aired on GRAMMY.com, and many winners were announced during that. The red carpet livestream did too. We’ll be updating all night as more winners are announced and as performances air. Stay tuned for more and see the full list of nominees (and currently announced winners) below.

Kacey Musgraves won Album of the Year! She beat Cardi B, Janelle Monae, Kendrick Lamar & various artists, Brandi Carlile, Drake, H.E.R., and Post Malone. She also won Best Country Album for Golden Hour (beating Chris Stapleton and others), Best Country Solo Performance for “Butterflies” and Best Country Song for “Space Cowboy.”

Cardi B won Best Rap Album for Invasion of Privacy, beating Mac Miller, Nipsey Hussle, Pusha T, and Travis Scott. Invasion of Privacy was also up for Album of the Year but lost. “Ooh the nerves are so bad… maybe I need to start smoking weed!” she said during her acceptance speech. With Offset standing next to her, she thanked him and their daughter, along with the album’s guests and a handful of others.

Childish Gambino‘s “This Is America” won Song of the Year, Record of the Year, Best Music Video and Best Rap/Sung Performance. This marks the first time a rap song has won Record of the Year.

Dua Lipa won Best New Artist, beating Margo Price, Chloe x Halle, Greta Van Fleet, and more. During her acceptance speech, she took a shot at the departing Grammy President Neil Portnow, who said women need to “step up” last year. “Where I want to begin is by saying how honored I am to be nominated alongside so many incredible female artists this year because I guess this year we’ve really stepped up,” she said in her speech. In general, it seemed like the Grammys really did make an effort to promote more women this year.

Drake won Best Rap Song for “God’s Plan,” beating Kendrick Lamar, Jay Rock, Future & James Blake’s “King’s Dead,” Eminem & Joyner Lucas’ “Lucky You,” Travis Scott, Drake, Big Hawk & Swae Lee’s “Sicko Mode,” and Jay Rock’s “WIN.” “God’s Plan” was also up for Record of the Year and Song of the Year but lost. When Drake accepted the award, he gave a speech where he implied that you don’t need a Grammy to prove your worth as an artist, and — maybe or maybe not because of that — his mic was cut off mid-speech.

Beck won Best Alternative Music Album, beating St. Vincent, David Byrne, Bjork, and Arctic Monkeys. St. Vincent did win Best Recording Package and Best Rock Song, beating Twenty One Pilots, Bring Me The Horizon, Ghost, and best of all, Greta Van Fleet. (Greta Van Fleet won Best Rock Album though.)

Brandi Carlile took home her first-ever Grammy wins for American Roots Performance, American Roots Song, and Americana Album. She was also up for Album of the Year, Record of the Year, and Song of the Year (but lost in those categories), making her the third most-nominated artist of 2019, behind Kendrick Lamar and Drake.

Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper‘s “Shallow” won Best Pop Duo/Group Performance and Best Song Written for Visual Media (beating Backstreet Boys, Maroon 5/Cardi B, Zedd/Maren Morris and others in the former, and Kendrick Lamar/SZA, Sufjan Stevens, and others in the latter). Gaga also won Best Pop Solo Performance for “Joanne (Where Do You Think You’re Goin’?)” (beating Beck, Ariana Grande, Camila Cabello, and Post Malone).

Pharrell Williams won Producer of the Year, Non-Classical, beating Kanye West, Boi-1da, Linda Perry, and Larry Klein.

There was a tie between Kendrick Lamar, Jay Rock, Future & James Blake‘s “King’s Dead” and Anderson .Paak‘s “Bubblin” for Best Rap Performance, beating Cardi B; Drake; and Travis Scott, Drake, Big Hawk & Swae Lee.

Ariana Grande won Best Pop Vocal Album for Sweetener (beating Taylor Swift, Camila Cabello, and others).

Laurie Anderson won her first Grammy, for Best Chamber Music/Small Ensemble Performace, with Kronos Quartet. It’s her fourth nomination since 1984.

Ella Mai‘s “Boo’d Up” won Best R&B Song, beating Miguel’s “Come Through and Chill,” Childish Gambino’s “Feels Like Summer,” H.E.R.’s “Focus,” and Toni Braxton’s “Long As I Love.” “Boo’d Up” was also up for Song of the Year but lost.

The Carters (aka Beyonce and Jay Z) won Best Urban Contemporary Album for Everything Is Love, beating Chloe x Halle, Miguel, Chris Dave and the Drumhedz, and Meshell Ndegeocello.

The late Chris Cornell‘s “When Bad Does Good” won Best Rock Performance, and his children accepted the award and gave a moving speech about their father’s legacy. Cornell was up against Arctic Monkeys, The Fever 333, Greta Van Fleet, and Halestorm.

High On Fire‘s “Electric Messiah” won Best Metal Performance, beating Between the Buried and Me, Deafheaven, Trivium, and Underoath.

Other winners include Dave Chappelle for Best Comedy Album, Weird Al for Best Boxed/Limited Edition Package, Mura Masa‘s remix of HAIM‘s “Walking Away” for Best Remixed Recording, Ludwig Göransson’s Black Panther score for Best Score Soundtrack for Visual Media, Buddy Guy for Traditional Blues Album, Willie Nelson for Best Traditional Pop Vocal Album, Justice for Best Dance/Electronic Album (beating Jon Hopkins, SOPHIE, TOKiMONSTA, and Sofi Tukker), H.E.R. featuring Daniel Caesar for Best R&B Performance (beating The Carters and others), H.E.R. for Best R&B Album, and more. See the full list of winners below.

PERFORMANCES

The awards ceremony began with a performance from Camila Cabello, who played her song “Havana” along with a theatrical stage production and the song’s guest Young Thug, and she turned it into a medley with “Mi Gente,” joined by Ricky Martin, Arturo Sandoval and J Balvin (the latter of whom hid his face behind a newspaper with the headline “Build bridges not walls” until he started singing). Watch below.

Janelle Monae played “Make Me Feel” and “PYNK.” Watch HERE.

Kacey Musgraves played “Rainbow.” Watch HERE.

As we were warned, Post Malone and Red Hot Chili Peppers collaborated on stage. It began with Post alone on stage with an acoustic guitar playing “Stay,” and then he went into the more upbeat “Rockstar” before joining the Chili Peppers for their 2016 song “Dark Necessities.” If that sounds appealing, you can watch below.

The legendary Dolly Parton, who’s this year’s MusiCares Person of the Year, performed her songs “Here You Come Again” with Kacey Musgraves and Katy Perry and “Jolene” with Miley Cyrus (who recently released her own very “Jolene” sounding song). She also covered Neil Young’s “After the Gold Rush” with Miley and Maren Morris, then Dolly performed a newer song from her Dumplin soundtrack with Little Big Town, and then brought everyone back out on stage for “9 to 5.” Watch clips below.

H.E.R., who was up for Best New Artist and Album of the Year, played “Hard Place.” Watch below.

Host Alicia Keys performed a medley of songs she wishes she wrote, at times playing two pianos at the same time. The medley including “Killing Me Softly,” Juice WRLD’s “Lucid Dreams,” Nat King Cole’s “Unforgettable,” Kings of Leon’s “Use Somebody,” Drake’s “In My Feelings,” and Lauryn Hill’s “Doo-Wop,” before ending with her own “Empire State of Mind.” Watch clips below.

Cardi B played “Money.” Watch HERE.

The legendary Diana Ross celebrated her 75th birthday by bringing down the house with powerful performances of “The Best Years of My Life” and “Reach Out and Touch (Somebody’s Hand).” At the end, she yelled “Happy birthday to me!” Queen.

Lady Gaga did her multiple-award-winning A Star Is Born song “Shallow” with a band including Mark Ronson on guitar, and you can watch that below.

Travis Scott played, and he had two very cool surprise guests joining him: James Blake and the legendary Earth Wind & Fire. Watch clips below.

There’s was a 60th anniversary Motown Records tribute by Jennifer Lopez and a brief guest appearance by Ne-Yo. She did a medley of “Dancing in the Street,” “Please Mr. Postman,” “My Girl,” “Do You Love Me,” and more. Watch below.

Brandi Carlile performed her multiple-award-winning “The Joke,” with the lyrics rolling on screen behind her in lyric video fashion, and she sounded great. Video below.

Beyonce proteges Chloe x Halle (who lost Best New Artist to Dua Lipa and also sang at the Super Bowl last week) performed a cover of Roberta Flack and Donny Hathaway’s “Where Is The Love,” and you can watch that below.

St. Vincent collaborated with Dua Lipa on a mashup/medley of their respective songs “MASSEDUCTION” and “One Kiss.” Watch HERE.

The late Aretha Franklin was honored with a tribute by Yolanda Adams, Fantasia, and Andra Day. They performed “(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman.” Watch below.
