Great Grandpa prep new album, share song, touring with Vivian Girls & more
Seattle indie rockers Great Grandpa are following their 2017 debut album Plastic Cough with their sophomore album, Four of Arrows, on October 25 via Double Double Whammy, as the band discussed in a new Stereogum feature, they took a very intentional leap from the raw, DIY indie rock sounds of their debut for this new album. “The stripped-back slacker thing was an intentional choice because it was easier to introduce ourselves as that and tour as that,” says guitarist Dylan Hanwright. “This is something we wanted to do, these compositions and softer sounds, but were scared to do because it’s hard to pull off. It’s less of an evolution than it was a real representation of our interests.”
You can get a taste of the new sound from lead single “Mono no Aware,” which is a lush indie rock song that reminds me a bit of Plans-era Death Cab For Cutie but doesn’t sound quite like them or any other band in particular. It’s very cool stuff, and it’s getting us excited to hear what the rest of this album has in store. Listen below.
Having recently wrapped up a tour with The Get Up Kids, Great Grandpa have more dates coming up this fall, including opening West Coast dates on Vivian Girls‘ reunion tour.
They’ll also play some Northeast shows with Dump Him (who have a new album coming this month), including Brooklyn’s Elsewhere Zone One on November 5 with local support from LVL UP offshoot Trace Mountains. Tickets for that show go on sale Friday (8/23) at 10 AM. All dates are listed below.
