Green Day at Aragon Ballroom

Green Day brought their club tour to Chicago (pics, setlist, video)

Green Day have been playing small clubs in support of their new album Revolution Radio. In getting back to the size venues they used to play in the ’90s, they’ve also been breaking out tons of deep cuts from that era. We already caught the tour at NYC’s Rough Trade and Webster Hall (the former of which was mostly ’90s deep cuts), and we just caught Billie Joe Armstrong, Mike Dirnt and Tre Cool (and their three touring members) again at Chicago’s Aragon Ballroom on Sunday (10/23).

This show’s selection of oldies included “J.A.R.,” “2000 Light Years Away,” “Burnout,” “Christie Road,” “Private Ale,” “Armatage Shanks,” and more, and they brought out a fan to play guitar on “When I Come Around” which they do a lot (but didn’t at Webster Hall). Here’s a bit of Bob Gendron’s review for Chicago Tribune:

Dividing time between sociopolitical urgency, personal anxiety and adolescent silliness, the California trio eschewed the bombast that marked many of its past tours. No concussion bombs, no video screens, no water guns. The distractions weren’t missed. Granted, Green Day still relied on three auxiliary musicians to flesh out arrangements. Yet the sound veered away from that of polished professionals coasting on halcyon glories and toward that of a still-vital rock band eager to reconnect with its youthful edginess.

Like on other dates of the tour, Dog Party opened (though we missed them). Pictures of Green Day are in the gallery above. Setlist below.

Green Day will be playing much larger venues on their 2017 tour with Against Me!, including Brooklyn’s Barclays Center in March (which appears to be sold out).
