Grimes shares first single from fifth album, "We Appreciate Power"

After talking about new music for a while, Grimes has finally released a new single. It’s called “We Appreciate Power,” it features HANA, and as is often the case with Grimes’ music, it’s got a constant tug-of-war between seemingly disparate types of music, but Grimes makes it work. In the case of “We Appreciate Power,” she mixes heavy industrial with sing-songy, playground-style chants. There’s also a hook in there that sounds a little like “Funkytown.” Grimes said the song was “written from the perspective of a Pro-A.I. Girl Group Propaganda machine who use song, dance, sex and fashion to spread goodwill towards Artificial Intelligence (it’s coming whether you want it or not). Simply by listening to this song, the future General AI overlords will see that you’ve supported their message and be less likely to delete your offspring.”

A press release from 4AD says this is the first song released from her upcoming fifth album, which she “has been working on.” Fingers crossed that we hear more info on that soon. Check the new song out below.

Recently, Grimes sang on a new Poppy song and a new song by Mindless Self Indulgence’s singer. She’s also set to appear on a song on Bring Me the Horizon’s upcoming album.
