Hammered Hulls (Alec MacKaye, Mary Timony) share song off Dischord debut, playing shows

Hammered Hulls

Hammered Hulls is the new band from (mostly) DC punk vets Alec MacKaye (Untouchables, The Faith, Ignition, etc), Mary Timony (Autoclave, Helium, Wild Flag, Ex Hex, etc), Mark Cisneros (Kid Congo, The Make-Up, etc), and Chris Wilson (Ted Leo and the Pharmacists, Titus Andronicus). We caught them making their NYC debut earlier this year before they had any songs out, and now they have announced their debut release, a three-song single due August 9 via Dischord (pre-order). They recorded it at Inner Ear studios with frequent Dischord producer Don Zientara and (Alec’s brother) Ian MacKaye. Along with the announcement, they’re sharing “Written Words,” which — as you might expect — sounds like classic ’90s Dischord post-hardcore, and it’s no surprise that this batch of musician pull this kind of thing off like pros. Listen below.

Hammered Hulls also announced two shows for August: Baltimore’s Metro Gallery on 8/28 with Mock Identity (tickets) and Brooklyn’s Union Pool on 8/29 with Clear Channel (tickets).

For more on Hammered Hulls, here’s their bio, written by Brendan Canty of Fugazi and The Messthetics:

Mary Timony (bass) and Alec MacKaye (vocals) grew up in the same Washington neighborhood and have spent the better part of their lives in each other’s somewhat distant orbit. Always aware of each other, but never able to play together.

Mark Cisneros (Guitar) has been in D.C. for more than a decade. He cut his teeth in Los Angeles listening to both Mary and Alec’s bands, but also a healthy dose of free jazz and garage. He is the man who plays everything with everyone, but this is his band.

Hammered Hulls are rounded out by Chris Wilson (drums), a monstrous drummer with no shortage of love for all three of his bandmates. Every person in this band is a fan of every other person in this band. Mutual respect drives this train. But to say they are an odd collection of influences is to understate the point. If you tried you couldn’t imagine what this band might sound like.

This single was recorded in a couple days at Inner Ear studios. Appropriate home to everyone in the DC scene.
