Handsome Boy Modeling School are back, opening for Dr Octagon, new LP in the works

Dan the Automator‘s group Dr. Octagon isn’t the only hibernating project he’s bringing back to life. Handsome Boy Modeling School, his whimsical collaboration with Prince Paul, are back with us too. Prince Paul was hinting late last year that a new record was in the works, and then HBMS made it official by playing, appropriately, a Saks Fifth Avenue NY Fashion Week party in February and, as you can see in the Instagram post from last week, Dan and Paul have broken out their drum machines and samplers and are working on that record now. They haven’t made a record since 2004’s White People (which featured Cat Power, Alex Kapranos, Del the Funky Homosapien, Mike Patton, Julee Cruise, and more). Their 1999 debut was Other Music’s #41 best-seller of all-time.

Handsome Boy Modeling School will also be opening for Dr. Octagon’s record release show at Brooklyn Bowl on Thursday (4/5) and tickets are still available. Dr. Octagon’s DJ Qbert will spin at the afterparty.

Meanwhile, Dr. Octagon’s first official new album in 20 years, Moosebumps: An Exploration Into Modern Day Horripilation, is out this Friday. Kool Keith remains one of the most surreal MCs on whatever planet he calls home, and Dan and QBert’s beats bring you right back to their original era. You can stream it right now via NPR and watch the new “Flying Waterbed” video below.
