Haruomi Hosono played his first of 2 NYC shows (pics, setlist)

Haruomi Hosono is perhaps best known as a member of Yellow Magic Orchestra, but he’s been a member of a few different Japanese groups in his 50 years in the business, and has released many solo albums. His solo work got a boost last year when many of his albums were reissued by Light in the Attic and this year he released Hochono House, which is a new, reimagined version of his 1973 solo debut. In celebration of that, Hosono is in the U.S. for a few rare live performances, the first of which was Tuesday night (May 28) at NYC’s Gramercy Theatre.

Eschewing his more experimental and electronic work, the music for this tour has a more juke jump jazz vibe, so he tailored his set’s songs to that style, aided by an impressive band (and an amazing slide guitarist). Hosono’s English is not extensive but his dry sense of humor came through with a few self deprecating jokes and gestures about his age. (He’s 71 years young!) Check out the setlist below.

Yuka Honda of Cibo Matto opened the night with a DJ set, and tonight’s show (sold out) will feature a DJ set from Sean Lennon. Check out pictures from Tuesday’s show in the gallery above.
