Heilung are bringing their viking show on first-ever North American tour

Metal-friendly Nordic dark folk band Heilung — think Wardruna or Dead Can Dance (who also announced a tour today) — released their sophomore album Furtha earlier this year on Season of Mist, and now the band — whose members are spread across Norway, Denmark, and Germany — have announced their first-ever North American tour. The band says, “Heilung is proud to announce our first tour in North America. Like our forefathers 1000 years ago, we will cross the ocean and set foot on the land they called Vinland. Ticket sales begin Friday the 11th of October 10 EST. Come join the ritual.”

Now, you might be wondering if this metal-adjacent project with an interest in vikings, history and nature is up to something sketchy. I was wondering, and actually the band does address such concerns on their Facebook page: “Heilung is amplified history from early medieval northern Europe and should not be mistaken for a modern political or religious statement of any kind.”

The tour hits San Francisco, Portland, Denver, Chicago, DC, Montreal, and NYC in early 2020. The NYC show happens January 24 at Webster Hall. As the band said, tickets for that show (and the whole tour) go on sale Friday (10/11) at 10 AM.

The fact that this band is big enough to headline venues like Webster Hall may seem shocking at first, especially considering the record label they’re on, but the album sold well, their videos have tons of views, their live show is elaborate, they’ve already soundtracked a Game of Thrones commercial, and this traditional style of “world music” has especially been growing in popularity in Europe where the similar Wardruna just announced that they’ve signed to Sony.

Heilung are also embarking on a European tour this month. All dates are listed along with some music below.
