Hendrix is an online community helping musicians connect (Meet Up in Brooklyn)

Are you a musician looking to start a new band or find someone to write songs with? The days of going through the back pages of your city’s local alternative weekly to find like-minded collaborators is mostly a thing of the past, and if you’re new to a city, you might not know where to start. Hendrix, an online community for musicians, was designed with just that in mind. “As a drummer who had just moved to Brooklyn and didn’t have a large professional network, I had a hard time meeting musicians to start a project with,” says Cory Etzkorn, who founded Hendrix in 2016. “Craigslist was always an awful experience. I wanted a platform where I could meet musicians online. It didn’t seem to exist, so I decided to create it.”

Since its founding in 2016, Hendrix has grown to host thousands of musicians, eschewing outside funding in favor of remaining independently operated. “We’re proud of the musicians we’ve attracted so far,” Etzkorn said. “The people are real and they tend to be extremely talented. The majority of our musicians return at least once a month and many have told us they’ve made meaningful connections. Ultimately, the site is only a small part of our vision. We want to be advocates for musicians everywhere and their success as independent artists.”

Musicians can create a free Hendrix profile that includes location, what instruments you play, styles you’re interested in, your availability — and you can upload examples of your music as well. You can post to their Classifieds if you’re looking to start a band, for someone to play with, or to find a last-minute replacement when your drummer accidentally slams a car door on his thumb (recent listings range from NYC to LA, from Boston to Kansas to Utah).

There’s also a more general Posts section where you can let others know about upcoming shows and what you’re into. Engineers, labels, music venues, DJs, producers, composers, music instructors, and fans are all welcome to join as well, with profile types for each. Hendrix also presents monthly meetups in NYC, where it was founded and is still based. The meetups are low key opportunities to expand your musical social circle, talk shop, and find collaborators. The next one is on February 19 at The Well in Bushwick. Get there early – beers are $2 until 8 PM.
