Henry Kaiser-Robert Musso Quintet @ The Stone, 2/7/2015
Avant guitarist Henry Kaiser curated The Stone’s programming for the first week of February. The week’s penultimate night (2/7) two separate shows, the early of which was the Kaiser-Musso Quintet featuring three virtuoso guitarists (Nick Didkovsky, Kaiser, and Bob Musso), plus bassist Jesse Krakow, and Weasel Walter (Flying Luttenbachers, Behold…the Arctopus) on drums. With three brilliant guitarists it was a bit of a squall at times with each vying for attention but each would eventually come to the surface for their very brief solos. The 85 minute set was surprisingly rock-oriented.
In addition to his formidable musicianship, Weasel Walter added considerable humor to the proceedings which started by him dumping a large bag of percussion instruments all over his kit. A heavy hitter, one of his cymbals had some chunks missing out of it and several more shards flew off during the performance. The late show, which we didn’t stay for, was a duo performance with Kaiser and Alan Licht. Pictures and video from the early show are in this post and continue below….
