horror star Sid Haig (Rob Zombie trilogy & more), rest in peace

Veteran character actor Sid Haig, who is probably best known for his role as Captain Spaulding in Rob Zombie’s House of 1000 Corpses trilogy, died on Saturday at age 80. The sad news was shared via his wife, Susan L. Oberg, who wrote, “On Saturday, September 21, 2019, my light, my heart, my true love, my King, the other half of my soul, Sidney, passed from this realm on to the next. He has returned to the Universe, a shining star in her heavens. He was my angel, my husband, my best friend and always will be. He adored his family, his friends and his fans. This came as a shock to all of us.”

In addition to the Rob Zombie trilogy (which includes the just released 3 From Hell), Haig was in Quentin Tarantino’s Jackie Brown, and also appeared alongside that film’s star, Pam Grier, in ’70s blaxploitation films like Coffy and Foxy Brown, not to mention roles in George Lucas’ THX 1138, many other Rob Zombie films and tons of television work over the last 50 years. (Including Batman, Star Trek and The Man from U.N.C.L.E. in the ’60s.) Sid, you’ll be missed. Watch a couple Captain Spaulding clips, and check out another photo tribute from Rob Zombie, below.

3 From Hell, which was Haig’s final role, got a three-day theatrical release earlier this month and will hit home video and streaming on October 15. The day before that, there will be one more chance to see the film on the big screen: October 14 at theaters around the country. This screening will also include an introduction by Rob Zombie, behind-the-scenes footage and exclusive posters at each location. Theaters haven’t been announced yet but tickets go on sale September 25 and more info is here. Trailer is below.
