“I Feel Love” turned Brooklyn Sanctuary into a ’70s disco (pics)

At 10 p.m. on Friday, the mixed crowd was pouring in to the sweltering space — mostly twenty-somethings, some in leisure suits and shiny halter tops they’d only read about, though mature types were also there, for some disco deja vu. Fashion show producer Jan Malan, 54, was thrilled to spot Randy Jones, the original cowboy from the disco group the Village People, exclaiming, “I grew up on their music and Donna Summer in South Africa. It made me gay.”

Meanwhile, Jones — in his trademark cowboy hat — said he was looking forward to the night, laughingly adding, “though I’m not sure I’m ready for the stairs, the darkness, and being touched.” – [Billboard]

The “I Feel Love” parties, which aimed to bring back the hedonistic vibe of ’70s-era Studio 54, happened over the weekend (9/9 & 9/10) at Brooklyn Sanctuary. The nights were presented by Casablanca Records, the infamous ’70s disco label that was recently reactivated, Giorgio Moroder spun his hits, and actual Studio 54 DJ Nicky Siano did a set as well. Many revelers came dressed as if it was 1977 — though those who didn’t wear polyester were probably more comfortable on what was one of the most humid weekends of the summer. As for the warnings of “You should be comfortable standing, walking, climbing stairs, being touched, interacting with participants, or being alone,” things didn’t get too crazy at the multi-room warehouse space. You can check out the sparkly, disco-ball-decked and confetti-covered fun from Saturday night in the gallery above.
