Iggy Pop, New Order, Patti Smith, Sufjan Stevens, Alabama Shakes & more played 2017 Tibet House Benefit (pics, video)
The 2017 edition of the annual Tibet House Benefit at Carnegie Hall happened Thursday night (3/16) with its usual impressive lineup of musical talent and some very interesting pairings. Birthday boy Philip Glass accompanied Laurie Anderson on “Etude no. 10” to open the set before Alabama Shakes took the stage to thunderous applause. Then it was Ben Harper’s turn and was joined by his daughter for a beautiful duet on “Everything,” following Harper’s own solo performance of “Paris Sunrise #7, Lifeline.”
Iggy Pop then teamed up with New Order’s Bernard Sumner, Phil Cunningham and Tom Chapman to perform their collaboration “Stray Dog” from New Order’s Music Complete. They then played Iggy’s song “Shades” and finished with Joy Division’s “She’s Lost Control” with Iggy and Sumner sharing lead vocals. Watch video of their set below.
Next up: Sufjan Stevens was joined by Cat Martino and Thomas “Doveman” Bartlett to serenade Man-of-the-hour Philip Glass on his 80th Birthday with the Happy Birthday Song along with a touching performance of his own “Star Spangled Banner.”
Patti Smith opened her segment with a stunning cover of Bob Dylan’s “Hard Rain is a Gonna Fall” accompanied by her son Jackson on guitar before being joined by her band for a powerhouse rendition of her classic “Citizen Ship.” She sounded amazing! The Scorch Quartet with Lavinia Meijer on the harp provided the haunting string arrangements throughout the evening. The entire night’s musical guests descended onto the stage to join Patti to close out the evening with her classic political call to resistance “People have the Power.”
