Iron & Wine

Iron & Wine back on Sub Pop for new LP, reveals new song & tour dates

Iron & Wine

Iron & Wine is back on Sub Pop for the first time since 2007’s The Shepherd’s Dog, and he’ll release his new album Beast Epic on the label on August 25. It’s the first Iron & Wine album since 2013’s Ghost on Ghost (4AD/Nonesuch), and it also follows Sam Beam’s collaborative albums with Band of Horses’ Ben Bridwell (2015) and Jesca Hoop (2016). “It’s a warm and serendipitous time to be reuniting with my Seattle friends because I feel there’s a certain kinship between this new collection of songs and my earliest material, which Sub Pop was kind enough to release,” Sam says.

Sam produced the album himself, and he says he “[employed] the old discipline of recording everything live and doing minimal overdubbing.” It was recorded and engineered by Tom Schick, and includes contributions from longtime Iron & Wine collaborators Rob Burger (keys), Joe Adamik (percussion), and Jim Becker (guitar, banjo, violin, mandolin), along with bassist Sebastian Steinberg (Soul Coughing and Fiona Apple), and Chicagoan Teddy Rankin Parker (cello).

First single “Call It Dreaming” does indeed sound more like classic Iron & Wine than his last couple albums, and that’s not a bad thing at all. Watch the video (directed by J. Austin Wilson) below.

Preorders are available now, including a deluxe LP version that includes a bonus third side of songs.

Iron & Wine also announced a tour, which includes dates with Jason Isbell, Joan Shelley, Lydia Loveless, John Moreland (who played NYC last night, 6/7), and OHMME.

The tour hits NYC’s Town Hall on November 13 with John Moreland and Brooklyn Steel on November 14 with OHMME. Tickets for both go on sale June 15 at 10 AM, with various presales for the BK Steel show beforehand. All dates are listed below.
