J Mascis’ Heavy Blanket opening for MBV, playing NYC w/ Stooges tribute tonight
J Mascis has been involved in many projects besides his main band Dinosaur Jr. over the years, and at least one of those will be playing the newly-opened NYC venue Coney Island Baby tonight (7/31). His psychedelic-blues rock side project Heavy Blanket will serve as headliners, and Stooges tribute band Ron & Scott, which J Mascis also plays in, will open the show. Aside from those two bands, the show features additional support from fuzz-rockers Purling Hiss, who opened for Dinosaur Jr. earlier this year. Tickets for tonight’s show are still available.
J Mascis and his Heavy Blanket project also opened for My Bloody Valentine at Philly’s Fillmore on Monday (7/30), and they’ll do it again at MBV’s NYC show at Hammerstein Ballroom on Wednesday (8/1). Tickets for that show are sold out, but resale tickets are available.
Heavy Blanket’s sole album came out in 2012. You can check out some videos from their Philly show last night, and watch J Mascis covering “I Wanna Be Your Dog” with Ron & Scott in 2017, below.
My Bloody Valentine and Dinosaur Jr toured together more than once back in the day (check out some old show flyers below). In 2015, MBV’s Kevin Shields joined Dinosaur Jr on stage in NYC.
