Janelle Monae has been touring in continued support of last year’s great Dirty Computer, and that tour hit NYC’s Rooftop at Pier 17 last night (9/25). Janelle’s set leaned most heavily on the new album, but also featured older faves like “Tightrope,” “Q.U.E.E.N,” “PrimeTime” (with a bit of Prince’s “Purple Rain” worked in), and more. Janelle was also as inspiring as ever with her stage banter. At one point, she said, “Celebrate the things that make us unique!”, and later she added, “Thank you for continuing the good fight. Stand up for the rights of women. Fight for rights of LGBTQIA.” At one point, she asked the audience to get low, stepped into the crowd, and ducked down low herself. While crouched down in the crowd, she told the audience, “Don’t forget to register to vote.”

Around 9:30, there was a break in the set (which prompted some people to leave), and then the crew brought out a table and Janelle became DJ J Mo, and she played OutKast’s “Bombs Over Baghdad,” Prince’s “Kiss,” Lizzo’s “Truth Hurts,” and some of her own songs, and did some vocals along with it too.

Then around 10 PM, she said something to the effect of she’d be playing “until they cut me off,” and encouraged the crowd to “keep it alive” before going into set-closer “Come Alive (The War of the Roses).” The band broke curfew with a horn solo, making for a thrilling end to an all-around great night.
