Japanese Breakfast crushes as a DJ, played BV afterparty with The Shacks

As promised, Japanese Breakfast (aka Michelle Zauner) dropped “We Didn’t Start The Fire” during her midnight DJ set at DT*UT on the Upper East Side on Saturday night. The unusual location was chosen (by us) due to its proximity to Panorama fest on Randall’s Island where JB was playing earlier that day. Max Shrager and Shannon Wise of The Shacks warmed up the room with a tasteful selection of music and then JB unleashed a torrent of pop hits, and some lesser known music like a song by her favorite Korean funk band.

Many showed up to party with JB and the energy was infectious – on both sides of the DJ booth. JB’s stage persona lately can be described as joyous and she gave that same energy as a DJ, even riding into the crowd on somebody’s shoulders while playing “Like a Prayer,” as you can watch in a video below. In addition to Billy Joel and Madonna, Michelle’s set also included crowdpleasers by Toto, Talking Heads, Sheryl Crow, Whitney Houston, Queen and Spice Girls.

Guests were sipping on Brooklyn Brewery and Deep Eddy Vodka, both our much-appreciated sponsors along with Original Penguin. Thank you also to Master and Dynamic for making sure our DJs were properly equipped.

Catch The Shacks live Saturday, August 4th at Monty Hall in Jersey City, at Rough Trade in Brooklyn on August 11th, on tour with Cults and on tour with Django Django. All dates HERE.

Catch Japanese Breakfast live at Brooklyn Steel and at other just-announced tour dates. Also check out our photos from her Panorama set. Read some of her tweets and watch that video below:
