Jarvis Cocker & Chilly Gonzales releasing concept LP 'Room 29' (listen to two songs)

Pulp frontman Jarvis Cocker has teamed with Chilly Gonzales for a new collaborative album titled Room 29 which will be out May 17. Chilly has played piano for Feist, Drake, Lykke Li, and others, and this collaboration with Jarvis looks to be an album of spare piano songs. (iTunes has it in the “Classical Crossover” genre and it’s out via classical label Deutch Gramophon.) As Pitchfork points out, the record features contributions from flautist Nathalie Hauptman, French horn player Hasko Kroeger, singer Maud Techa, and film historian David Thomson. It’s a concept record and here’s the description:

Do you believe in ghosts? What if a room could tell you the life-stories of the people that have inhabited it? Better still – what if it could sing you those stories? In Room 29, Jarvis Cocker and Chilly Gonzales give a voice to those ghosts, using music, theatrics, clips from classic Hollywood movies and more to reveal the secrets of Room 29 of the Château Marmont hotel in Hollywood.

You can listen to “Tearjerker,” “The Return of Tearjerker” and watch a short album trailer below.
