Jeremy Enigk previewed his new album in Boston (pics, setlist, review)

Sunny Day Real Estate frontman Jeremy Enigk just played a few solo shows in the Northeast, including one at Brooklyn’s Bell House on Tuesday (6/13) and one at the Berklee campus in Boston last night (6/14). Here’s a review of the Boston show:

Jeremy Enigk graced the stage of The Red Room at Cafe 939 located on the Berkelee College of Music Boston campus on Wednesday June 14th along with Tomo Nakayama. Throughout the course of the set, Enigk discussed that after his two year PledgeMusic campaign, his new album is finished and will be released in September. He said on stage that, after shopping it out to a handful of labels, nobody wanted to put it out. So with the help of his PledgeMusic campaign, he’s self-releasing it.

The album was produced and recorded in Spain by Santi Garcia and Ricky Faulkner, the same team responsible for Jeremy’s 2009 OK Bear release. Enigk also expressed that he’s over playing acoustic for now and that he wants to return touring with a full band. He described the new album as being more “rock” focused. The second song of the set titled “Light and Shadow” is on the upcoming release and may be one of the strongest songs Jeremy has written since the days of Sunny Day Real Estate. It has a soft/big infectious vocal melody with elements of tension and release, invoking the SDRE spirit many have grown to love.

“I guess I can’t get away without playing one of these songs,” remarked Enigk as he plugged in his guitar to play “Song About an Angel” from the fan favorite Diary album as part of the encore. The words “Sunny Day Real Estate” never fell from his lips all night. After the show with a smile on a confident face, Jeremy remarked, “I feel that this is the start of something new.”

Jeremy’s only upcoming show at the moment is in Cincinnati on Friday (6/16) as part of Indie Vol. 17.

In related news, Sub Pop will soon be reissuing Jeremy’s 1996 solo album Return of the Frog Queen on vinyl.
