Jerry Cantrell talks not hanging out with Kurt Cobain; Alice In Chains expand tour

Alice in Chains founding member and guitarist Jerry Cantrell spoke in an interview on the Let There Be Talk podcast last year, where he discussed the history of the band, and their relationship with the rest of the Seattle grunge scene in the 1990’s. Today, Alternative Nation transcribed one of the interview’s most quotable moments, where Jerry says he “never fuckin’ hung out” with Kurt Cobain, but the two had “a really good talk” the “first and only time” they met. Read an excerpt from the interview, and listen to the full episode, below.

Out of all of the bands, Nirvana was kind of outside of our camp, because our camp was Love Bone, Soundgarden, and Alice. We were all under the same management in the same buildings, and Nirvana was kind of outside that, so I didn’t really know those guys. I knew Krist [Novoselic] probably the best. I never even hung with Kurt in Seattle, the first and only time I ever spent time and hung with Kurt was in Rio in my hotel room when we hung out for a couple of hours, and it was a really great hang, we had a really good talk.

We’re two Seattle guys, and we never fuckin’ hung out. I always remember that time with him, it was kind of special, but also really odd, because every day we were around each other, we’re going up to the office. Chris [Cornell] is doing this, Kim [Thayil] is doing this, Jeff [Ament]’s up there, Stone [Gossard], we’re just working on posters for this.

We had a guy go out and put our posters around, we’ve got to sell some tickets, all of that shit. Doing little tiny interviews with fanzines and shit like that, returning fan mail, all of that crap. It was fun, it was totally mom and pop.
