Jessica Lea Mayfield‘s honky-tonk-angel voice was tailormade for late-night spins on a lonely jukebox in the middle of nowhere.

Yet this precocious singer-songwriter with the cool alt-roots vibe seems to be everywhere these days. Rolling Stone and Spin pegged her as an up-and-coming artist to watch, and she recently made her network television debut on David Letterman’s show.

“Normally, I don’t get nervous playing shows, because I’ve been doing it my whole life,” Mayfield said by phone last week while running errands in Kent, her hometown.

“But I was definitely throw-up nervous to play David Letterman’s show, for two or three days before I did it. Once I got there, I relaxed. It was fun.” [Cleveland.com]
