My Morning Jacket’s Jim James collaborated with Teddy Abrams, composer, conductor, and music director of the Louisville Orchestra, on a song-cycle about “politics, the natural order and the hopelessness of hatred.” Some of the songs were new, and others pulled from James’ catalog of previous work. “The core idea to me is trying to reflect on the fact that nature doesn’t know how to hate,” says James. “Humans are part of nature obviously, but why do we have this thing called hatred and how do we get rid of it? We’re fighting nature and thinking we can prevail over nature, but we’re killing each other and killing the planet.” Titled The Order of Nature, the work made its debut April 6-7, 2018 as part of the Louisville Orchestra’s annual Festival of American Music, and the second night was recorded for a new album that’s out October 18 via Decca Gold. You can listen to the sweeping “Set It To Song” below.

Jim James and Teddy Abrams will be playing a few special shows with local orchestras over the next year, including Seattle, Denver and Washington, DC. Those dates are listed below.
