Joel Gion of Brian Jonestown Massacre releasing new solo LP (listen)

Hey, Mr Tamborine Man, play a song for us (more by Dana Distortion)

You may know Joel Gion as the mutton-chopped tambourine player in The Brian Jonestown Massacre and DiG! documentary scene-stealer, but he also makes music on his own. Joel will release his second full-length album this week via Beyond Beyond is Beyond and while you can draw parallels to the BJM, Gion is on his own trip here. “Groovy” is probably the best way to describe the album that is flush with flutes, bongos, 12-string guitars and other jazzy bachelor pad essentials. (If you must make comparisons, this is closer to Dungen than anything Gion has done with Anton Newcombe.) It’s a terrific sounding record and Joel knows his way around a hook, too. Here’s what Joel told us about it:

This album was self informed by some life spanning experiences such as attending an Ike & Tina Turner show from inside my mother’s tummy, being a smeared-lipstick Goth teen on the run from the rednecks, to being an up-all-week E’s and whizz kid in the lineup that introduced you to The Brian Jonestown Massacre. Now just add flute.

The record is out on Friday (11/17, order yours) but you can listen to the whole thing right now — a stream of the album premieres below:
