Joey Covington (Jefferson Airplane), RIP

Joey Covington

Joey Covington, who appeared on Jefferson Airplane‘s 1969 album, Volunteers, and officially joined the band as their drummer for their final two albums, Bark and Long John Silver (not counting the 1989 reunion album), passed away in a car crash this past Tuesday (6/4), Billboard reports. He was 67.

In addition to drumming in Jefferson Airplane and even doing some singing/songwriting, Joey was also responsible for introducing violinist Papa John Creach to the band. He also played with JA side project Hot Tuna, contributed to Paul Kantner’s Blows Against the Empire album, and briefly worked with Jefferson Starship. He also had one solo album, Joe E. Covington’s Fat Fandango.

Rest in peace, Joey. You’ll be missed. Listen to some songs he co-wrote below…
