John Doe, Neil Hamburger & more joined Yo La Tengo for Hanukkah night 2 (pics, setlist, videos)
We’re back in Hanukkah groove now, with Yo La Tengo celebrating night 2 at Bowery Ballroom on Wednesday (12/13). The night’s openers were luchador surf greats Los Straitjackets (who have made records with Nick Lowe, night’s one‘s surprise guest), and Yo La Tengo paid tribute to them by donning masks for the start of their headline set. Los Straitjackets joined them early on for a instrumental cover of The Velvet Underground’s “Run Run Run,” before making way for harpist Mary Lattimore who joined YLT for the rest of their set.
The surprise encore guest on Night 2 was LA punk icon John Doe, fresh off a gig at City Vineyard, who performed X’s “The New World” and “Adult Books” with the band, as well as his solo song “My Darling, Blue Skies,” and covers of Dylan’s “Pressing On” and The Randoms’ “Let’s Get Rid of New York.” Check out the setlist (via Jesse Jarnow), more pics and a few videos from Hanukkah Night 2 below.
The awesomely awkward stylings of America’s Funnyman, Neil Hamburger (who played The Bell House on Tuesday) was the comedic support for the night, and WFMU’s Dave the Spazz made the night’s mix CD. Proceeds from Wednesday went to Physicians for Reproductive Health.
You can still get tickets for tonight’s Hanukkah Night 3 show. Who do you think will be the opener, comedian and encore guest?
